Take a guided tour of his family’s historic chateauesque mansion designed by Richard Morris Hunt. And, bask in the beautifully landscaped gardens and outbuildings, many of which were designed by Chester Holmes Aldrich.

No visit to Grey Towers is complete without a stop at the estate’s most unique feature, the Finger Bowl, designed by William Lawrence Bottomley. The Finger Bowl is an exquisite outdoor dining table in the form of a raised pool surrounded by a flat ledge large enough to accommodate a place setting. Chairs were pulled up to the pool and food was passed in wooden bowls floated on the water. The Finger Bowl is situated in a wisteria covered domed arbor resting on an open structure of twelve stone piers.

Milford Showroom Opens

Van Gorders’ Furniture recently opened a new showroom in historic Milford, Pennsylvania to complement our locations at scenic Lake Wallenpaupack and downtown Honesdale.

The Milford showroom at 321 Water Street features a Sealy Mattress Gallery and a selection of traditional brands along with unique rustic and lodge furnishings, which are a Van Gorders’ specialty.

“We’re bringing a longstanding business to town, and we feel welcome already,” says Proprietor Scott Van Gorder. “We’ve fallen in love with Milford and expect to be here a longtime.”

Pictured at the Grand Opening of the new Milford, PA showroom are local business leaders with members of the Van Gorder family, from left to right: Max, Sarah, Derek, Jackson, Beth, Dylan and Scott; Pike County Commissioner Karl Wagner, Bill Cohen of the Pike County Chamber of Commerce, Pike County Commissioner Matt Osterberg, and Gina Ehrhardt of Representative Mike Peifer's office. Van Gorders’ is a 4th-generation family-owned business that began in 1936 when Ralph Van Gorder founded it as the Honesdale Furniture Exchange within a sprawling four-floor historic landmark that was originally the National Hotel, and has stood at the corner of Church and Sixth Streets since 1865.

Since that time, the business has grown and changed with the times. In 1978, Don Van Gorder opened a modern second showroom on Route 6 at beautiful Lake Wallenpaupack. His son Scott joined the business and brought a distinct focus on lodge- and Adirondack-style furnishings that reflect the natural beauty of the Pocono Mountains, Catskills and Delaware River Highlands.

Scott’s three sons Derek, Dylan and Max have since entered the business, and in October of this year Van Gorders’ Furniture expanded into its third showroom in Milford. “We have staying power, a unique product mix, and an honest approach to business,” adds Scott.

Through more than 75 years in business, however, some things have never changed such as a caring and knowledgeable professional staff with many years of valuable experience. Every team member at Van Gorders’ Furniture is dedicated to providing an enjoyable and relaxing shopping experience, which means being helpful without being pushy, just like the old days.
