The Pinchot Family Legacy
Overlooking the charming village of Milford, PA is Grey Towers National Historic Site, the ancestral home of Gifford Pinchot, first chief of the US Forest Service and twice Governor of Pennsylvania. Pinchot is often called the father of America’s conservation movement.
Take a guided tour of his family’s historic chateauesque mansion designed by Richard Morris Hunt. And, bask in the beautifully landscaped gardens and outbuildings, many of which were designed by Chester Holmes Aldrich.
No visit to Grey Towers is complete without a stop at the estate’s most unique feature, the Finger Bowl, designed by William Lawrence Bottomley. The Finger Bowl is an exquisite outdoor dining table in the form of a raised pool surrounded by a flat ledge large enough to accommodate a place setting. Chairs were pulled up to the pool and food was passed in wooden bowls floated on the water. The Finger Bowl is situated in a wisteria covered domed arbor resting on an open structure of twelve stone piers.
